Statistics such as stolen bases, runs batted in, and batting average, typically used to gauge players, are relics of a 19th-century view of the game and the statistics available at that time. The central premise of Moneyball is that the collective wisdom of baseball insiders (including players, managers, coaches, scouts, and the front office) over the past century is outdated, subjective, and often flawed. A film based on Lewis' book, starring Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill, was released in 2011. Its focus is the team's analytical, evidence-based, sabermetric approach to assembling a competitive baseball team despite Oakland's small budget. Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game is a book by Michael Lewis, published in 2003, about the Oakland Athletics baseball team and its general manager Billy Beane. As with Harris, Raybourn, and Ashley, Penrose creates engaging, easy-to-love protagonists. The present volume was so satisfying, however, that it made me an insta-fan and regretful not to have discovered it from the get-go. Murder At Kensington Palace is the series third and I’m sorry I didn’t read the first two. Cyr, Raybourn’s Speedwell, and Ashley’s Holloway. Oy, as if I need another historical mystery with romantic elements to follow, but this cross-genre is appealing to me … so, here I go again with Andrea Penrose’s Wrexford and Sloane Regency-set, slow-burn romance and mystery series. "Nineteen Eighty-Four's impact upon the English language is extensive many of its concepts: Big Brother, Room 101 (the worst place in the world), the Thought Police, the memory hole (oblivion), doublethink (simultaneously holding and believing two contradictory beliefs), and Newspeak (ideological language), are common usages for denoting and connoting overarching, totalitarian authority Doublespeak is an elaboration of doublethink the adjective "Orwellian" denotes that which is characteristic and reminiscent of George Orwell's writings, specifically 1984. Since its publication the terms Big Brother and Orwellian became widely used in popular speech. Orwell's novel became famous for its satirical portrayal of surveillance, and of society's increasing encroachment on the rights of the individual. Becoming disillusioned with this system and his meagre existence, Smith began a futile rebellion against the system. The story followed the life of Winston Smith, an apparently minor civil servant whose job was to falsify records and political literature, and thus perpetuate propaganda. In 1949 English author Eric Arthur Blair, writing under his pseudonym, George Orwell, published the dystopian novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four in London. We are past the idea that the tutor is the expert who fills the learner up with knowledge. I guess it is a given that we all want our learners to be able to handle learning processes, to inquire and to explore in order to do their own finding out. On the other hand, just jump in – you and your learner(s) will still learn a lot and enjoy yourself doing so! If you are not a tutor reading this then you’ll still be having experiences with objects as part of daily life. To carry out this activity it will be helpful if you, the presumed tutor, are aware of three arguments beforehand – the aims of inquiry learning, the concept that learning through objects is helpful and full of possibilities and thirdly the idea that contextual knowledge be drip fed at the appropriate time. What do they like or recognise about it? In what ways does engaging with this object transform the learner? In what ways (if any) does acquiring knowledge about context expand or bound the experience and the learning? ( You can see the activity here – it is the next post). The purpose of inquiry learning is to enable the learners (of any age) to engage with an object or artefact on their own terms. So I thought I’d share it with the GDP community too. I was recently asked, within a MOOC from MoMA, to create an activity that helped learners undertake inquiry learning, especially around art or design artefacts. We want it to be as accessible as possible. “I don't want anything to get in between the art and the audience. “The work speaks for itself,” says Mitchell Greco, associate artistic director at Stages and the director of Drag Wonderettes. Stages is trying to present art, not send a message. The show will run concurrently with Drag Wonderettes, a new show featuring '50s and '60s songs performed by the drag group The Marvelous Wonderettes. First up is The Legend of Georgia McBride, Matthew López’s 2014 play about a down-on-his-luck Elvis impersonator in Florida who kicks his career into high gear when he joins a drag troupe. The venerable Houston theater company is stepping up with a double dose of drag, scheduled far before the current controversy but still delicious in its timing. Wait until they see what Stages has on tap. Just last week, a group of Houston area schools canceled field trip plans to see James and the Giant Peach at Main Street Theater due to concerns over cross-gender casting and (false) reports of drag performance. A rendering of the stage setup for the upcoming production of Drag Wonderettes at Stages StagesĪnti-drag hysteria is sweeping the land like a cynical brain virus, as the centuries-old phenomenon of men performing in women’s clothes has become a bizarre wedge issue in the culture wars.
